A gel mask fusing three forms of hyaluronic acid with a trio of vitamins to hydrate, brighten and revitalize the skin.

Vie Collection reasserts its cosmeceutical prowess with MÉSOFORCE HYALURONIC ACID VITAMIN C MASK, a high-tech mask inspired by mesotherapy - a treatment approach in which hyaluronic acid, vitamins and antioxidants are injected just beneath the skin’s surface to hydrate and revitalize the skin. Formulated with three forms of hyaluronic acid and a powerful vitamin trio, MÉSOFORCE HYALURONIC ACID VITAMIN C MASK is designed to deliver the same rehydrating, plumping, smoothing and brightening effects as traditional mesotherapy, via topical application.

Hyaluronic acid penetrates to all skin layers, preserving moisture, filling wrinkles and smoothing the skin’s surface while a powerful cocktail of vitamins B5, C and E deeply hydrates and restores evenness, freshness and radiance to the complexion. Vie Collection MÉSOFORCE HYALURONIC ACID VITAMIN C MASK has an energizing citrus scent and is packed with vitamin beads (C & E) that offer a refreshing burst of brightness. It has a moisture-rich gel formulation with an ultra-soft finish and delivers extended moisturizing and enhanced radiance from the very first use* and a complete “meso”-effect in 1 month. **

Directions for use: Apply a medium layer of mask to the face and neck, avoiding the eye contour area. Leave on for 10 minutes, then rinse. For optimal effectiveness, use twice a week. Tested under dermatological control. (We recommend using after the Exfoliating Cream)

Key ingredients:
• High Molecular Weight Hyaluronic Acid - Hyaluronic acid, a natural component of the extracellular matrix, plays a key role in the structure and organization of the dermis. Helps maintain optimal skin hydration by trapping water in the skin’s deeper layers, as would a sponge. Strengthens skin cohesion and firmness.
• Low Molecular Weight Hyaluronic Acid - Hyaluronic acid with a molecular weight between 15,000 - 50,000 daltons easily penetrates skin layers. Limits transepidermal water loss (TEWL) by strenghtening the skin’s tight junctions, reinforcing the skin barrier. Swells on contact with water to fill out fine lines related to dehydration and lifestyle (smoking, sun and pollution).
• Encapsulated High Molecular Weight Hyaluronic Acid - Encapsulated in spherulites, multi-lamellar microvessicles that easily penetrate the skin and gradually open for controlled release. Expands on contact with water in the dermis to add volume to hollow areas and fill deep wrinkles.

• Vitamin C - revitalizes and reactivates the biological functions of the skin. Boosts collagen synthesis to reduce fine lines and wrinkles. Re-energizes cell metabolism, traps free radicals and prevents skin aging. Revives skin radiance.
         • Vitamin B5 - a constituent of Coenzyme A, plays a key role in cell metabolism. Enhances skin hydration, hydrates the deep layers of the dermis, stimulates epidermal differentiation, restore’s the skin’s barrier function and improves the skin’s appearance.
• Vitamin E - Lipophilic and anti-free radical. Protects cells and skin tissues from premature aging by acting as an anti-oxidant shield. Frees the skin from dullness.

Impressive results:

Time Traveler Serum

INtelligent Nutrients Time Traveler Serum
INtelligent Nutrients Time Traveler Serum
A retinol treatment you can love. Rewind the clock with IN's newest skincare addition.

An amazing plant retinol complex that is both gentle and effective. Dark spots and wrinkles fade away, while Time Traveler reveals a more even skin tone and texture, as well as a 211% increase in moisture in 24 hours.

Revolutionary Plant Retinol Science™ and Sea Bioactives kickstart aging skin cells. All without the skin stress of traditional chemical retinols.

  • Plant Retinols including Sea Fennel and Spanish Needle kickstart skin cell regeneration for reduced wrinkles and smoother skin.
  • Sea Daffodil diffuses the size and intensity of dark spots.
  • Red Algae improves moisture in all layers of the skin faster and more efficiently than hyaluronic acid.
Retinols are clinically proven to boost cell renewal, retriggering skin cell development that slows with age. Skincare is saturated with synthetic retinols that smooth wrinkles, fade spots, banish breakouts and improve overall skin texture. However, they can be toxic and actually age skin in the long run by over thinning, stressing and drying. IN's safe, non-toxic and truly effective formula with Plant Retinol Science — a breakthrough in plant technology derived from two proven actives:

Proven to reduce wrinkles by up to 28% after 28 days
Improves skin firmness by up to 25% after 28 days
Smoothes skin texture by up to 35% after 42 days

Improves skin uniformity by up to 47% after 28 days

Hormones, breakouts, diet and lack of sleep, harsh micro-bead exfoliants — and of course, the sun —disrupt normal melanin production and skin function. Soon, dark patches or spots appear. Lines and wrinkles seem to amplify when skin is parched and dry. IN's combination of sea bioactives provide the ideal synergy to target dark spots while loading skin with intense, plumping moisture:

In 24 hours, hydrates like applying synthetic hyaluronic acid for 2 weeks
Boosts natural hyaluronic acid (moisture) by up to 211% within 24 hours

Reduces intensity and size of age spots up to 63% after 42 days

*Claims are based upon external clinical, lab and consumer studies done on specific ingredients. All are based on twice-daily use. Results may vary.

Vie Collection Micellar Water
For Face, Eyes and Lips - A gentle toning water to cleanse and remove makeup.

Vie Collection has integrated four new-generation cleansing and revitalizing ingredients in MICELLAR WATER Face, Eyes and Lips. This formulation to gently cleanse, remove makeup and revitalize the skin in one single step.

Micelles trap makeup and impurities for gentle removal without rubbing or rinsing. Volumizing Hyaluronic Acid provides a three-in-one epidermal and dermal action to firm, redensify and rehydrate skin. Vie Collection’s Moisturizing Duo of Vitamins B3 and B5 enhances the skin’s barrier function and hydrates the deep layers of the epidermis to reveal a fresh and radiant complexion.

Vie Collection MICELLAR WATER is formulated without alcohol and is tested under opthamological and dermatological supervision. It is suitable for sensitive eyes and contact lens wearers. With its delicate fresh floral scent and unanimously proven 3-in-1 effectiveness,* Vie MICELLAR WATER combines the freshness of a water with the effectiveness of a toning lotion, leaving the skin supple, comfortable and refreshed.

*Satisfaction test conducted on 22 women, twice-daily application for 28 days.

Directions for use: Gently apply to entire face, eyes and lips with a cotton pad. Do not rinse. Tested under opthalmalogic and dermatological control.

Active Ingredients:

• Cleansing Micelles - small spheres with dual affinity that behave like a cleansing agent. Lipophilic parts attract and trap makeup and aqueous and oily secretions in the center of the micelle. Hydrophilic parts allow the micelle to be easily removed by water.

• Volumizing Hyaluronic Acid - Hyaluronic Acid plays a key role in the structure of the epidermis, helping to maintain an optimal level of hydration by trapping water in the skin’s deeper layers. At the epidermal level, Hyaluronic Acid stimulates the synthesis of cell junction proteins, limiting transepidermal water loss and regulating hydration. At the dermal level, it causes the skin to retain water, forming a reserve. Hyaluronic Acid stimulates the synthesis of collagen I, increasing skin firmness and smoothness.

• Vitamin B3 - a water-soluble vitamin rarely stored by the body. Vitamin B3 helps stimulate the barrier function of the skin by reducing transepidermal water loss. It also stimulates collagen synthesis to improve skin texture.
• Vitamin B5 - component of Coenzyme A. Plays a key role in cell metabolism and participates in
hydration of the deep layers of the epidermis.

Rahua Body Collection

Rahua Body Collection
Rahua has introduced a much-anticipated line of three 100% natural body products.

The Rahua Body Collection, which includes Shower Gel, Body Lotion and Amazon Oil, uses symbiotic (rainforest grown) ingredients ethically and sustainably sourced from the Amazon Rainforest, including Sacha Inchi oil, Buriti oil, Quinoa, Palo Santo and Rahua’s star Ungurahua oil. These rare and potent miracle ingredients, provided by Mother Nature, are proven to provide superior results to chemically laden alternatives. What we put on our skin, our biggest organ, eventually goes into our bodies, and chemical-laden body care products can actually accelerate the effects of the sun and pollution on the skin. Rahua Body Collection uses 100% natural plant-based emollients and purifiers that cleanse, protect and strengthen the dermis and epidermis to create beautiful, soft, supple and glowing skin.

Like Rahua hair care, the inspiration for the Rahua Body Collection came from ingredients introduced to founders Fabian Lliguin and Anna Ayers by women of the Quechua-Shuar tribe in the Amazon Rainforest. The women harvest and process the Ungurahua nut to produce Rahua oil in accordance with ancient, ancestral wisdom that has been passed down from generation to generation. Lliguin and Ayers, amazed by the ingredients they were exposed to in the Amazon, enlisted the help of top US chemists and scientists who have a deep understanding of biology and natural ingredients to further test and develop the benefits of these rainforest grown ingredients. After years of research and development Rahua is pleased to share three body products that are made by nature and proven by science.

“We chose to create a body line out of the need,” says Ayers. “I was looking for a fabulous hydrating lotion that felt amazing on the skin and was natural. During my pregnancy I only  wanted to use the most natural solutions available. I could not find "the lotion,” so we decided to make it! Same with the shower gel & body oil -- I wanted natural luxury & indulgence for my skin.

When our loyal fans of Rahua hair care started asking us if they could use the Elixir & the Conditioners on their skin, we knew it was time to make body products that customers could  trust to be safe and effective but still luxurious! Fabian and I are very pleased to offer more  products that benefit more people & serve more purposes.”

Rahua’s signature soothing Palo Santo scent has been combined with lavender, eucalyptus  and vanilla bean to give the Rahua Body Collection a warm and sensual aroma.

Rahua Body Collection is:

• 100% Natural
• Free of all toxins
• Gluten free
• Organic
• Vegan
• Symbiotic
• Rainforest grown

Key ingredients:

 • Rahua*Ungurahua Oil: The small molecules that make up this omega-9 rich oil penetrate deep into the skin, working into the dermis and epidermis and resulting in supremely hydrated skin, in even the driest season.
Sacha Inchi oil: This fantastic, plant-derived Amazonian oil is rich in omega-3 (a  fatty acid usually found in fish). The lipid compound moisturizes dry skin improving softness and elasticity. Essential fatty acids like this one are vital for  skin’s health and now, instead of ingesting omega-3 supplements, we can apply this nourishing oil directly tothe skin.
Quinoa: This organic plant-based, super-food/protein deeply moisturizes and softens skin, while its antioxidant properties continuously rejuvenate and protect skin from the elements.
Buriti Oil: Another Amazonian wonder oil, this is a natural emollient that provides  high levels of the carotenoid pro-Vitamin A, adding a luminous and healthy glow to  the skin.
Palo Santo "holy wood": Rahua’s signature scent offers a delicate fragrance while  providing a soothing aromatherapy experience.

The Mighty Macadamia

Macadamia Nut
From humble beginnings to culinary superstar, the macadamia nut is poised to make an impact on the health and wellness scene.

Although it was considered a delicacy when Australia’s Aboriginal people first discovered it thousands of years ago, spa-goers are only now clued in to its appeal. A rich yet lightweight texture and a bounty of benefits have turned macadamia into the hottest prospect in the current crop of beauty-oil contenders.

According to chief brand officer Cherie Jackson, Australian line Jindilli is a pioneer in the macadamia-oil business. “Our company was the first in the world to press macadamias for oil more than 30 years ago,” she says. “Although it was initially used for culinary purposes, local massage therapists started sourcing the oil to use in their services, and that’s when we discovered how skin-compatible the oil is.” In the intervening years, its star has only risen—pure macadamia oil is now the most commonly used product in the spa and wellness industry in its native Australia, where an estimated one in three spas use it as their preferred massage oil, says Lynne Ziehlke, marketing development manager for the Australian Macadamia Society. “Over the last five years, there has been a significant increase in the understanding of the curative properties of macadamia oil, which has led to a massive increase in the use of macadamia oil in new product formulations, especially in Australia, France, Korea, and the U.S.,” says Ziehlke. “Hundreds of new products containing macadamia oil as the main active ingredient have been released to the market, and the product categories that have seen the greatest growth have been facial skincare and hair products. Worldwide, approximately 70 percent of all macadamia oil is used by the cosmetic industry.”

In a Nutshell

Credit for the current macadamia boom must go to the nut’s intrinsic virtues—by all accounts, its nutritional profile is off the charts, especially when the nuts are cold-pressed (this is true for many other plant oils, such as olive oil - cold pressing is optimal). The resulting oil is primarily composed of fatty acids, says Ziehlke, three of which make up the vast majority of its content: omega-9 oleic, omega-7 palmitoleic, and saturated palmitic. “Macadamia’s profile resembles the oil that skin naturally produces,” says Janel Luu, CEO of PurErb. “It also contains important levels of [omega-6] linoleic acid, pantothenic acid, and phytosterols.” According to Luu, omega-9 reduces inflammation and seals in moisture. Omega-7 helps prevent lines and wrinkles, firm skin, and keep it supple to delay the signs of aging. Omega-6 helps prevent moisture loss, and phytosterols help repair the skin’s barrier function, promote absorption of nutrients, and slow down collagen loss.

Amal Elbahnasawy, founder and creator of Artisanskin, looked to that high phytosterol count when developing her Skin Medicine Body Oil. “Phytosterols have a calming and healing effect when applied to the skin, working as an anti-inflammatory and aiding in skin recovery, all of which are extremely beneficial to sensitive skin types,” she says. A multipurpose oil suitable for skin ailments as wide-ranging as stretch marks and diaper rash, it has found “a rather large yogi cult following” and “Every client that has used this oil has said they’ve noticed an instant difference in the texture of their skin after the first use,” she says. “I even have older clients who swear they’ve felt an improvement with the arthritis in their knees after applying our body oil.”

While claims that it alleviates joint pain may be a bit of a stretch, it’s not overstating matters to say that with so many positive side effects, macadamia oil is a versatile ingredient to have in the arsenal. “Oils with oleic acid are richer and heavier, so they are especially suitable for very dry skin, as they are extra occlusive and can seal in moisture really effectively for smooth, supple skin,” says Andrée Austin, founder and co-director of Pure Fiji, and “palmitoleic acid supports numerous skin functions, like boosting collagen production, protecting against oxidative damage, and rejuvenating skin cell membranes.” Palmitoleic acid is naturally found in sebum, and it functions in a similar manner, promoting skin health and dissipating with age. Ziehlke says that loss can be counteracted, though. “Macadamia oil contains the highest level of palmitoleic acid of any known food product, so by applying macadamia oil to the skin, we are able to replace some of the palmitoleic acid that has been lost naturally over time.” Macadamia oil is also ideal for sensitive and mature skin, says Luu. “It absorbs quickly without leaving a greasy residue, reduces skin irritation and inflammation, restores and maintains moisture levels, and soothes dehydrated, chapped, and cracked skin,” she says.

This nut isn’t a tough one to crack—such assets are a boon for formulators and spa menu planners alike. Although tree-nut sensitivities can be a concern, allergic reactions to macadamia are rare, say experts. “Macadamia offers clients instant comfort from dry, itchy skin, as it mimics skin’s natural hydration makeup,” says Tiffany McLauchlin, director of education for Lira Clinical.

Macadamia might be inherently beneficial, but it also has the ability to amplify the properties of other ingredients, as well. “It’s often referred to by the skincare industry as a carrier oil because it absorbs into the skin so well,” says Ziehlke. For that reason, it’s often combined with ingredients that don’t absorb as easily, because it facilitates the process. Macadamia is a great partner for other natural ingredients like avocado, banana, bicarbonate, honey, and royal jelly, particularly in face masks where it brings deep benefits, says Emilia Aguirre de Gottschamer, cofounder of Valhalla.

Look for it on the ingredient lists of your favorite beauty products.

Spring Skincare

spring skincare
As you can see, posts have been very irregular here for a while. My bad.
In my defense, as you may know, I've been busy producing a MN maker market for Union Depot - Lowertown Pop.

Lowertown Pop popped up April 9th and the Mytalk 107.1 Shop Girls were also on hand and kind enough to give me a few minutes on their show. (April 9th - Hour 1 - starting just after the 15 min mark).

I know at one point, Allison wanted to discuss spring makeup shades but I really wanted to discuss the importance of skincare during this change in the seasons, (sorry Allison!) and mention that it's time to switch up our skincare and get a facial to start our spring routine off fresh.

Winter is time for heavier moisturizers, and creams - Spring is time for lightening things up a bit.

Having spent over 25 years in the spa and salon, I know the importance of regular facials. At least at the change of the seasons - spring, summer, winter, fall. If your pocket book allows it, have them more often.

Facials deep clean and moisturize our skin and prepare it to maximize the potential of your skincare products.
A reputable esthetician will recommend the best skincare for your skin, so please invest in it. Remember, do it now vs. later. At some point you're going to spend money on your skin, in some fashion, if you want to keep it young looking - invest now. Trust me.

I turn the big 5-0 this year and have been adjusting my skincare according to my age and weather for many years.
It's now SPRING so I put away the heavy cleansing cream (I live in MN and winter is wicked!) and bring out the cleansing milk - using that morning and evening to cleanse my skin.
After cleansing I spray a toner onto my face (many don't come in spray form, so I use an atomizer to spray mine on. (I find it wasteful to use a cotton pad to apply toner as skin should be damp to receive serum and moisturizer).
While my skin is damp (not dripping) from my toner, I apply a serum and then immediately follow with a lighter moisturizer than I have used in the winter months).

Exfoliating and masking are also must-do's for optimum skin health. I recommend 2x a week. I do my masking and exfoliating on the same day. Then follow up with my toner, serum and moisturizer.

For men who shave or women that are doing at-home "blading", minimize irritation by keeping blades fresh - since we have all become fans of the "subscription box" phenomenon, I love that new razors arrive from Dollar Shave Club on a schedule that you determine. (I fell in love with their brand several years ago when I saw their videos/commercials.)

As summer approaches and humidity increases it's time to change it up again after another facial. I will often opt for only the serum after the toner or only the moisturizer in the hot, humid MN summers.

Though I know it is recommended to wear sunscreen at all times, I'm not a fan of this philosophy. If you live in a constantly sunny climate or spend prolonged periods of time outside, yes, some form of sunscreen should be applied. But here in MN, many folks suffer from vitamin D deficiency, from our long darker winters, so sunscreen all the time is contributing to this problem.
Please do your research and consult your doctor or dermatologist on this matter.

Roses are red...

An enduring symbol of love and luxury, ancient rose finds new life in modern-day skincare.

From rose-scented treatment rooms to baths infused with the precious petals, rose has long been a popular ingredient in spas. As the world’s oldest cultivated decorative plant, it is primarily native to the Northern Hemisphere but likely originated in Persia, according to The Magical and Ritual Use of Perfumes (Destiny Books, 1990) by Richard Alan Miller and Iona Miller. The flowers quickly spread, popping up symbolically in Greek and Indian mythologies and in physical form throughout Europe and the Middle East. Over the years, women as disparate as Joan of Arc and Cleopatra have been linked with this token of love, and if they’re good enough for a hallucinating martyr and a cunningly beautiful queen, they’re certainly suitable for we spa-going mortals.

As befitting a plant of such stature, “Rosa damascena is one of the most precious and expensive oils currently on the market,” says Amy Galper, founder and executive director of the New York Institute of Aromatherapy. “The petals don’t yield much essential oil, so it takes a huge amount of plant material to distill a few milliliters, approximately 10,000 roses for just five milliliters, but just a tiny bit has a profound effect in skincare.” Donna Cristino, founder of the beauty brand Jing Ai, calls rose oil “a hidden little gem” and promises that we’ll be seeing a lot more of it in the future.

While rose is often noted for its scent, the velvety flower has hidden depths. “Rose essential oil is an excellent emollient; it also offers antiseptic and astringent properties to treat acneic skin and properties that help treat redness and inflammation,” says Jaklin Idris, director of education for Decléor Paris. “Rose oil can help refine skin texture, controlling skin diseases such as atopic dermatitis.” And, according to Galper, it has no known adverse effects. “Rose can be a great addition to skincare formulas, especially for evening out stressed skin and nurturing clients’ confidence,” she says. “It also has great therapeutic characteristics, balancing and soothing tired, dull, and aging skin.”

Rose’s high concentrations of vitamins A, C, and E encourage healthy skin rejuvenation and protect from free-radical damage, says Tiffany McLauchlin, director of education for Lira Clinical. The flower also contains fatty acids like linolenic acid, which hydrates and suppresses tyrosinase activity for healthier, brighter skin.

Precious Petals

Rose appears in skincare products in multiple forms, from standard extracts and essential oils to cutting-edge stem cells, and each offers its own benefits. Rose extract and essential oil are often valued for their aromas, says Nicci Anstey, global sales development manager for Elemis, but the extract is reputed to have soothing and refreshing benefits, while the essential oil has hydrating properties. There’s also rosehip oil, which “contains a high content of unsaturated essential fatty acids, antioxidants, and vitamins A, C, and E,” says Anstey. “It’s highly moisturizing and replenishes dry, stressed skin, helping it to feel more elastic, firm, and hydrated.”

A Rose by Any Other Name

There are more than 100 species of rose, and companies are combining different rose stem-cell extracts for maximum benefits. “White rose supports natural cell regeneration and the skin barrier while restoring suppleness; damask rose helps to tighten pores and purify and smooth the skin; rosa canina (rosehips) calms and brightens skin and helps prevent transepidermal water loss; and pale rose helps to rebuild the moisture barrier and provide suppleness for the appearance of newer, softer skin,” says director of education Tricia Campbell.

Celebrated as the queen of essential oils, steam-distilled Bulgarian rose oil (known as rosa damascena or rose otto) is considered to be some of the best in the world. “Soothing, cleansing, and an anti-inflammatory, it is ideal for sensitive skin, rosacea, and broken capillaries, and it has a sweet floral scent that is uplifting, romantic, and calming,” says Agnes Ding, public relations and marketing manager at Anantara Spa at The Puli Hotel and Spa (Shanghai). “Traditional Chinese medicine uses the petals to nourish skin, and in Ayurvedic medicine, rose is used to balance emotions and tone and cool the skin.”

At Anantara Spa, rose is only combined with massage oil for special packages or treatments, but when it’s used, Bulgarian rose oil is preferred. “Extracted from the petals of the pink rose plant rosa damascena from Europe and the Middle East, rose absolute is brimming with antioxidants that help combat signs of aging and cellular damage,” Ding says.

Picking Up the Scent

Skincare benefits are all well and good, but the coveted flower also boasts an appealing scent with therapeutic advantages. “For many people, rose evokes a scent memory that makes it not only a fabulous treatment for the skin but also an experience for the spirit,” says Cindi Moreno, former director of spa and wellness at the Waldorf Astoria Spa at the Boca Raton Resort & Club (FL). Rose oil can also be used to subtly perfume a treatment room or a welcome area. ”The aroma has tremendous calming and nurturing properties,” says Galper. “It’s quite transporting and helps us make deeper connections to our spiritual sides.” It’s important to keep in mind, however, that because it’s so expensive, diffusing it isn’t the best idea. “An authentic oil is so potent that one drop in a half-ounce of facial serum is enough,” says Galper.
