The Brazilian Blowup Continues

via Campaign for Safe Cosmetics.

Remember when we first posted to you in 2010 to let you know that Brazilian Blowout hair-straightening products were found to contain up to 12 percent cancer-causing formaldehyde – even those products that were labeled "formaldehyde-free?" Well, our persistence is starting to pay off and we need your help to keep up the pressure! (click and send a letter to the FDA)
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has finally told the makers of the hair-straightening product Brazilian Blowout they need to clean up their act (a year after Canada and several other countries pulled these and similar products off the shelves).
In a letter to Brazilian Blowout dated August 22, 2011, the FDA noted that the products are "adulterated" and "misbranded." This action follows thousands of letters to the FDA from Campaign for Safe Cosmetics supporters, 10 members of Congress, and the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics and allies regarding the safety of these products.
Brazilian Blowout had until yesterday, September 12, 2011, to respond to the FDA's letter. We don't have high expectations: the company has maintained that its products are perfectly safe even when OSHA and the cosmetics industry itself stated otherwise, and on August 24 posted an online letter to salons and stylists encouraging them to keep using its products, despite mounting concerns.
The Campaign for Safe Cosmetics is glad that FDA took this first step, and we hope to see further action right away. But for an entire year, and even right now as you read this, salon workers and customers have been exposed repeatedly to cancer-causing chemicals in Brazilian Blowout and other hair-straighteners.
The FDA can and should do more. Please help us keep up the pressure and ask the FDA to protect salon workers and customers from this unnecessary toxic exposure by issuing a voluntary recall! (Unfortunately, FDA doesn't have the power to order a mandatory recall due to our outdated cosmetics laws.)
Clearly, the system is broken. In order to hold Brazilian Blowout and other cosmetics companies accountable and make sure laws are on the books that protect all of us from toxic chemicals in the products we use on our bodies we need your help.

Nature for our Nails

It's a fact that with weather transitioning and air becoming more-dry, both nails and the surrounding tissues are going to start experiencing the drying effects of the seasonal change.
And without proper nourishment and moisture protection, fall is the beginning of what can be a very long seasonal battle to keep them healthy.

By proper nourishment and protection we mean nutrition that actually supports the nail health, nourishes the tissues to keep them healthy and soft, helps keep hangnails at bay and is proactive in protecting the moisture balance in trying conditions.  Cuticle & Nail Balm by NONTOXIQUE is the best proactive solution to healthy nails and tissues, and here's why;
1.  It is loaded with vitamin-C from kiwi seed to help minimize and prevent hangnails.  Yes, vitamin-C is a major key in keeping hangnails to a minimum or preventing them altogether.
2.  It's highly anti-inflammatory thanks to the avocado, which is helpful in soothing inflammation from tissue picking, irritations or wounds.  The chlorophyll is also what gives it its natural green color.
3.  Its coconut oil is highly antibacterial and moisturizing to help protect and soften the tissues, especially excellent during the fall and winter months when skin and nails battle with maintaining softness.
4.  And the beeswax and myrrh help protect the nails from moisture loss in the drier weather so your nails don’t chap.  Both are also known to be excellent for protecting against foreign microbes that can cause tissue infections, which is important during this time of year when picking up bacteria and getting ill picks up.

So if proactive is what you are, and protecting your nails and their delicate tissues is important, now is the ideal time to implement the healthiest nail and cuticle care into your routine.

    Fair Feedback

How happy was I to receive this email the morning after the Minnesota State Fair ended?:

My wife and I stopped by your booth in the Grandstand near the beginning of the Fair and I got one of your soaps on a stick, since you described how good it was for shaving. I've been using it for over a week now and comparing it against my usual shaving cream, Trader Joe's Mango Honey moisturizing shaving lotion. I've also been trying it with both a blade and a wet-dry electric shaver. In both cases your soap is at least as good as Trader Joe's. It seems to lubricate a bit better, which reduces irritation, and I could tell immediately that it was a better moisturizer, which will be very nice when the cold Minnesota winter arrives and the air gets so horribly dry. The fact that you use such high-quality ingredients is the icing on the cake, and makes me feel even better about using your soap, since my wife and I have made it a priority to try to use products that are more natural and less man-made.

In short, it's a great product!

Though I absolutely hate my bar being labeled a "soap" (it is SO much more luxurious, folks) I don't think shhh.  is ever going to escape that label. - So much work has gone into it to make certain it is so much better than soap. Try it. You'll like it.

    Fall Transition

The first thing we often think of with the seasonal change from summer to fall is 'dry'. Air is becoming a bit more crisp and dry and that means our skin, too, becomes more dry, especially our hands.  While some are prone to more excessive drying, none of us escape this dilemma.

When skin isn't properly cared for, drying often becomes layers of dryness that create a barrier for much needed nutrition to regenerate skin cells, increase cell hydration, and simply help maintain smooth healthy skin.
We all love the fall.  We even build a new wardrobe for the season so we can enjoy it in style.  So this year be sure you are polished from tips to toes with a few key items that will help complete your look, and maintain healthy hands for work and play.

Herbal Scrub: You shouldn't be without it if you spend a lot of time outdoors this fall

It's gentle granular action combined with natural glycolic acid works to safely dissolve the 'bonds' that keep dead dry skin attached to the hands, carrying it away so nutrition can penetrate freshly revealed skin.
    • It's loaded with antioxidant vitamins A, E & F to fend off free radical damage, and hydrate skin
    • Its almond oil base is loaded with rich essential fatty acids loeic and linoleic, critical for skin health.
Restore Day Creme:  You shouldn't be without rich topical nutrition if you want to preserve and protect the health, youth and beauty of your hands
    • Combination of mowrah and mango butter prevents skin drying and has been proven to reduce fine lines. (commonly seen on dry hands)
    • Buriti and Sea buckthorn oils aid in cellular rejuvenation, increased moisture in the outermost layers of the skin, improved skin elasticity and UV protection, needed even in the fall.
    • Kiwi seed, buriti and alfalfa work together to stimulate collagen synthesis, necessary for maintaining supple, healthy back of hands.
    • Sweet orange is wonderful for fall weather thanks to its ability to help keep skin soft, strengthen the epidermis and increase cell hydration.
